Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Makes a Gift of Ninth Avenue Property

DENVER (Aug. 7, 2007) – The University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center (“UCDHSC”) and the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation announced that the Foundation will gift the value of its conditional interest in the Ninth Avenue UCDHSC property to the university in order to assist in the university’s relocation and the development of the Anschutz Medical Campus.

In 2003, the Colorado General Assembly passed legislation that requires UCDHSC to assist in the Ninth Avenue property’s future development, sale, or use in order to facilitate the university’s relocation to the Anschutz Medical Campus. Frederick G. Bonfils originally deeded that property to the University on the condition that it be used only for hospital or educational purposes; therefore, if the Ninth Avenue property is used for other than hospital or educational purposes after the university relocates, title may revert to Mr. Bonfils’ successors including, in the absence of the gift, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.

Citing the original intent of Frederick G. Bonfils, members of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Board of Trustees concluded that the gift to aid the university’s move to the Anschutz Medical Campus is consistent with Mr. Bonfils’ original intent to provide for excellent health, education, research and patient care.

“The Foundation’s trustees recognize the importance of a world-class medical campus in Colorado and are pleased to continue our support toward the accomplishment of that goal,” said J. Landis Martin, chairman of the board of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.

“We believe that were Mr. Bonfils here today he would enthusiastically support this move to build a larger and better state-of-the-art health sciences center as the university is now doing at the Anschutz Medical Campus,” said M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, chancellor at UCDHSC. “The university remains most grateful to the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation for their continued support as we expand our operations and services for the good health of Coloradans.”

The UCDHSC and affiliated institutions have enjoyed some 80 years of tremendous growth and success on the land so thoughtfully donated by Frederick G. Bonfils. Its nearly $2 billion operation, which includes more than $350 million in annual outside research grants, eventually outgrew the site at Ninth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The success of this early medical campus is a testament to the vision and legacy of Mr. Bonfils.

In addition to this gift, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation previously supported the relocation of the May Bonfils Stanton Ambulatory Care Clinics to the new campus.

The University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center is one of three universities in the University of Colorado System. Located in Denver, on the Auraria Campus, at Ninth & Colorado Blvd. and on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo., UCDHSC is Colorado’s premier research university offering more than 100 degrees and programs in 12 schools and colleges and serving more than 28,000 students in Metro Denver and online.
